The first book in a cozy series by an Edgar Winner

A rollicking tale of murder, romance, and a bordello....

Rebecca Schwartz, nice Jewish lawyer with a few too many fantasies, is happily playing the piano in a whorehouse when she suddenly finds herself assigned to make sure a near-naked state senator escapes a police raid. That dirty job done, a lovely evening turns even more delightful when she's picked up by the cops and spends the next two hours at the Hall of Justice. Could this day get any worse? Of course! Guess who arrives home to find a dead hooker on her living room floor?

Handsome Parker Phillips, Rebecca's new beau and the most attractive man she's met in ages, is arrested for the murder. (Worse, she suspects he might actually have done it.)

On the plus side, another very attractive man is following the case - reporter Rob Burns of the San Francisco Chronicle, a possible ally. And there are other possibilities.

Fans of Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Bond, and Elizabeth Peters will get a kick out of this one.

I love Julie Smith. I have read two of the Skip Langdon books and now have discovered Rebecca Schwartz. Like Skip, Rebecca is smart and self aware but not full of herself. Nor is she gorgeous and always telling us so (how unlike many male protagonists). Smith's books are believable, well plotted, and the reader can see how she gets where she does through the books actions rather than through a narrated wrap up of loose ends in the final pages. I have never been to New Orleans where Skip hangs out but I did, many years ago, live briefly in San Francisco and I love Rebecca's little geographic details that take me back to my second favorite city.

I have seen some of Smith's books described as cozy mysteries - that is a description that usually makes me put a book down pretty fast and one I think is badly misapplied to her writing. There are no cats, bakeshops, bookstores, recipes or cute and crazy old ladies in Death Turns a Trick - just a good story, well told, and remarkably free, especially for a electronic book, of typos and grammar no-nos. I look forward to reading more.

Death Turns a Trick The Rebecca Schwartz Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Julie Smith Nan McNamara booksBnimble Books Reviews

I picked up this book looking for a funny light read...instead I got a headache. I do not normally review books that I don't finish but I decided to make an exception here. The characters, instead of being fun, were just annoying. If I had to hear one more time about the main character being a middle-class, feminist, Jewish attorney I was going to scream and possibly throw the book (which would have been bad since I love my kindle)!! At one point it seemed as though she mentioned these facts every other sentence. Seriously...I understood it the first time, you don't have to continually mention it. The story was also very slow and I got to the point where I simply could not bring myself to care what happened to these characters. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
Julie Smith has scored again with this very entertaining series.

Each series has a unique tone and broad array of characters. The Rebecca Schwartz does not have to be read in order, but this first in the series is the best place to start. The setting is San Francisco, my home town, and it is obvious that Ms. Smith spent plenty of time learning about "The City". I think I've been to all the places, and the authors' sharp eyes missed nothing!

As always, each character has a unique and skillfully drawn personality, and I think that I met most of them. And yes, they are well portrayed. The variously dysfunctional family forests of the protagonists are entertainingly portrayed, and made me feel right at home!

I highly recommend this book as an excellent diversion from these stressful times. It is a bit more of a "cozy" than the Skip Langdon and Talba Wallis series, but it is still replete with witty and entertaining characters and offers up a heathy serving of lol moments.

Allow yourself plenty of time. I could not put it down, and looked for the next in the series as soon as I finished. I'd get your favorite beverage and snacks, settle into your favorite chair, and have a great time.

Thank you Julie for the great ride!
This book jumps right into the action on page one.
It then goes back and forth between the present and the past until the past catches up with the present.
We learn a bit about Rebecca Schwartz in chapter two, but it is in chapter four that I really got to know and love her; she tells us about a shopping trip and takes us to her apartment.
NOTE Keep in mind this book was written in 1982 - thus the "current" fashions, nobody has a cell phone, you can't just Google something, and $25,000 was a lot of cash.

There are NO TYPOS in this book, it has good editing and grammar, grown-up language - I don't mean swearing, I mean very little swearing and no young-adult slang, there are even some "big" words that sent me to my dictionary.

This is a fun read and I'm going right on to book #2 in the series.

This IS a good stand alone book, you do not have to read #2 to get any answers or closure.
